Explore the rivers of Suriname
3,000 km of rivers flow through Suriname. From the impressive Suriname, Corantijn, and Marowwijne Rivers, that rise deep in our untouched rainforests, to local rivers and smaller tributaries that create the intricate highway-system, linking the coastal area to the interior. Traveling by water is a way of life for Suriname from a different angle.

The opportunities for tourist to explore Suriname by boat grow every season. Most expeditions to the interior include some traveling in dugout canoes or korjalen, but in the coastal districts and on the major rivers our more comfortable river cruise-boats are the best choice of transportation.

From Nickerie and Paramaribo, boat trips along the Corantijn and Coppename Rivers, the Nickerie River and its tributaries the Marataka and Wayambo, and the Saramacca River, take tourists right into the heart of West Suriname. The unfolding scenes along the riverbanks, visiting villages as you cruise further into the interior, and sighting giant otters in Kaburi Creek are experiences not to be missed.

Surinamese history is always best appreciated from the rivers. The picturesque Commewijne District is an area that is certainly well worth exploring by water. Many of the old plantation houses are only accessible from the rivers, and cruises can start from Paramaribo. Leonsberg, Alkamaar, Nieuw-Amsterdam or Marienburg. Also in Commewijne, the defensive significance of historic Fort Nieuw Amsterdam is best recognized if you approach from either the Suriname or Commewijne Rivers.

Jodensavanne, the 17th century Jewish settlement on the Suriname River, is another historic site well worth reaching by water, and this makes a popular trip from Paramaribo.

A choice of boats is available for day excursions or sundowner cruises. Dancing on a former ferryboat under the full moon is a fun pastime too! Several operators offer expeditions from two to five days. The number of boats and the selection of programmes offered is also increasing every season.

Fishing trips by riverboat are exceptional in Suriname, and opportunities for sighting rare water birds or catching peacock bass make an expedition by boat really special. Daytrips starting in Paramaribo having catfish or other species as the catch of the day, are available on request. In Addition, tours that allow you to appreciate especially the Amerindian village cultures, and their relationship to the rivers, provide a unique experience not to be missed.

The encounter Suriname’s natural heritage from our water highway is another privilege available just for a few. We know it is often possible to see more of our bird life from the comfort of a riverboat than in the confines of the forests. The mangrove trees on the river banks are truly beautiful.

Overnight accommodation can range from simple facilities on board, or maybe stops overnight at villages and camps on the banks of the rivers, to the latest boats with more sophisticated private cabins complete with their own facilities. Above all, river trips are just great for relaxation. It’s easy to make up grow with friends, or check to see if any excursions are scheduled.

Currently, an Association of River Operators of Suriname (ARCOS) is under establishment. Further information on this organization will be available on the tourism website for Suriname: www.suriname-tourism.org.
